The boys varsity lacrosse got back to 500 today with a close 11-10 victory over the hard fighting Highlanders of the Pingree School.
Quinton Delorey got SPS on the board early with a nice alley dodge and goal to take the lead 1-0. Pingree responded shortly thereafter, and it was knotted
at 1-1 until Quinton would again find the back of the net on a blast from the top of the box. Pingree would then score the next two goals to go up by one before
Conley Bohan finished on an in-tight dodge to knot it
at 3-3.
Bryan Folsom would score the next one for SPS as he drove the cage on a nice face-off win to make it 4-3. The Highlanders would score one of their own before
Conley Bohan scored his second goal of the day to give us back the lead but only for a short while, Pingree scored in the final seconds of the first period to make it 5-5 after one quarter of play.
The second quarter saw much of the same back and forth action as the Big Red added two more to their total with goals from Charlie Hepp and Mike Seward as Pingree scored 2 of their own to tie the score
at 7-7 at halftime. The second half was again back and forth as each team battled for possession and defenses stood tall to charging offenses. In the third quarter, Quinton was able to find the back of the net once more while Pingree found it twice and the Big Red found themselves down 9-8 after three periods.
The fourth quarter was a nail biter as Pingree extended their lead early on to go up 10-8. The game again was very tight back with numerous scoring chances for each team but no more goals until Tommy Humphries caught a feed from Quinton and finished low to bring the big red with one goal, 10-9 with under 6 minutes to play. The game was back and forth for much of the remaining time with neither team able to find the back of the net. The big red defense held off the Pingree onslaught in the final minutes until
Conley Bohan found a cutting Fin Kilbourne who scored the game tying goal with
1:40 to go on the clock. With the score knotted
at 10-10, Pingree won the ensuing face off but the Big red defense held strong and forced a turn-over with 36 seconds to go in the game. On the ensuing clear, our defense found Quinton breaking at midfield, Quinton cleared the ball and drove down the middle to score the winning goal with 23 seconds to go in the game. Overall, a great effort from everyone including our goalie, defense, and face-off guys (who were near perfect in today's game) to take home the win 11-10. The boys get ready for Northfield Mount Hermon who comes to town Wednesday.
