The battle of the Big Reds was a thrilling contest from start to finish, complete with early spring cold temperatures and rainy conditions.
The first quarter ended with the score tied at three with two goals from
Gretta White '25 and one from
Eliza Ekstrand '24. Exeter then scored four goals in the second quarter to go ahead 7-4 at the half. An assisted goal by
Gretta White '25 from
Meg Bohan kept the Big Red within three.
In the third quarter,
Hadley Cepiel '24 scored off a free position to pull within two. Four minutes later Exeter scored again to bring their lead back to three. After a strong defensive stop, SPS got the ball back with only a few seconds left in the third quarter. The SPS fast break stormed into action and
Gretta White '25 scored with 0.4 seconds left in the quarter off a pass from Parker Hansen '25. This spark swung the momentum in favor of the Big Red of SPS heading into the fourth quarter, down by two.
Hadley Cepiel '25 scored just over two minutes into the final quarter off a pass from fellow captain Sam Moyer '24. Just over a minute later,
Meg Bohan tied the game on a well-placed shot running in from the eight on a free position.
With just under six minutes left in the game,
Gretta White '25 checked the ball out of Exeter's stick and started another Big Red fast break.
Amelia Shair '25 passed the ball to Sam Moyer '24 who scored the go-ahead goal with a beautiful behind-the-back shot.
With three minutes left in the game, Exeter recovered the ball off an attempted clear and scored on an open net to tie the game and force it into overtime.
A yellow card at the end of the 4th quarter gave Exeter possession at the start of overtime and they scored on their first possession to give them the win. Â
