The Big Red took to the pit
ch to open the 2024 season this past Saturday on the pristine Hunt field. It felt like a midsummer afternoon and yet both teams were ready to work hard. In the early going, SPS did a ni
ce job possessing the ball in the ba
ck and middle third of the field. Midfielders Randy Fu '25, Pat
Cooley '25 and Will Iler '26 did well in
changing the point of atta
ck and
creating width. Defensively,
Carter
Corbett '25, AJ Zoltowski '27,
Gavin Nestler '25 and Pat Ri
cca '26 limited the Zebra's
chan
ces. Throughout the up and down play, neither side
could find the ba
ck of the net as the half wound to a
close.
The se
cond half showed mu
ch of the same intelligent play, though the Zebra's through balls put pressure on SPS. The best
chan
ce for the Big Red in the se
cond half
came with just minutes to play in the
contest when Alexander de Burgh
Codrington '28 made a
clean inside tou
ch from the left flank and bent a beautiful ball that just found the far post and boun
ced away – in
ches from
celebration.
Credit keeper Leo
Colinet for preserving the shutout with several keys stops and strong
control of his box.
Looking at the season ahead the squad is ready to take on a
challenging s
chedule and believe they
can build a
culture that will
compete at every moment. Tri -
captains Randy Fu,
Carter
Corbett and Pat
Cooley will help set the pa
ce. David Kwon,
Samson Nguyen, Ryan Ham, Lu
cas Miller and
Gavin Nestler are returning 6
th formers to the
club and will be
counted on for their maturity and work ethi
c. Add in several returning 5
th formers in Will Iler, Blake Tru
chon,
Henry Wilson and
Asun Zhu and a pair of veteran fourth formers, Teddy Sulger and AJ Zoltowski and you have a group who learned a great deal from and with ea
ch other from last season. The Big Red has added an additional eleven members to the
club who will bring energy as well as quality te
chni
cal ability. Up from our Junior Varsity program are Luka
Clark '25
Charlie Hepp '25,
Theo Quan '26 and Pat Ri
cca '26. New
comers to the team, and the s
chool, are
Evers Saleeby '27, as well as six third formers - Alexander de Burgh
Codrington,
Henry Hayne,
Peter Magyar,
Colin Smith, Nolan
Chen and
Noah Levy.
The Big Red is also ex
cited by three talented and positive goalkeepers will do their best to lead the defense. They are
Kristof Lovegren '25,
Hunter Morton '26 and Leo
Colinet '27.
Next up for SPS is a battle with the Bishops of Brooks S
chool.
Go Big Red!
