Back on the ice in less than 24 hours, the Big Red hosted the Pomfret Griffins on the Gordon rink. It took less than five minutes before a Pomfret line change left speedster
Erin Flaherty all by herself on a breakaway which Erin confidently buried for the 1 – 0. Unfortunately, a defensive miscue thirty seconds later gave the Griffins a breakaway of their own and game was back to even. While SPS would create most of the offensive pressure, they were not able to regain the lead due to the excellent goaltending by Pomfret in the first period.
The second period saw much of the same with the Big Red maintaining much of the puck possession and the shot advantage. The lone tally would be by
Chandler Curtis who, after a nifty pull back move, fired a low shot off the far post an in. This was
Chandler Curtis' first goal of her SPS career.
The Big Red began the third period with a power play and wasted no time increasing their lead.
Maggie Berleth moved the puck to
Malin Wilde whose quick wrister was tipped by
Kelsey MacPherson for her second goal in as many nights. The hardworking Griffins would not go away as less than two minutes later they created an odd man rush and the ensuing shot created a rebound which they pounced on to make it a one goal game once again. A good response by the Big Red as
Maggie Berleth, from the behind the net, saw fellow co-captain
Chelsea Bell wide open in the middle of the ice and quickly moved the puck up ice.
Chelsea Bell beat one defender and went upstairs to put SPS back up by two. In less than two minutes
Erin Flaherty would give the Big Red the breathing room they would need.
Madelyn Humber played the puck down low to
Maealie Glanzer whose quick shot created a rebound for Flaherty to calmly finish. This is how the game would end with SPS holding on to win – the final being 5 – 2. Credit the Griffins for their hard work throughout the contest.
The Big Red have an excellent week ahead with four days of quality time together to keep getting stronger as a team before they take on ISL foes Groton on Friday and Noble and Greenough next Saturday.
Go Big Red.
