One of the Big Red's goals before heading off on their long winter weekend was to jump on Thayer Academy early and take advantage of their bus ride to the north country. They did exactly that. Forty – five seconds into the game SPS made in 1 – 0 as a shot from
Madelyn Humber left a nice rebound for
Kelsey MacPherson to put in the back of the net. A minute later it would be
Madeline Allen making it 2 – 0 picking up a rebound of a
Maealie Glanzer shot. Thirty seconds later
Madeline Allen who would make it 3 – 0 when she finished a breakaway after a brilliant pass from
Maggie Berleth coming out of the zone. A fantastic start for the Big Red. Thayer called a time-out to settle their club down and the game evened out for much of the remainder of the period. However, with under two minutes to play SPS would score one more – a sharp pass from
Madelyn Humber to
Tess Mulkerron split the Thayer defense and sent Mulkerron on a breakaway. An excellent deke was stopped with a great save by the Thayer tender but was left for
Chelsea Bell to tap in the net.
The second and third periods would have the Big Red control much of the action. The squads' final goal might have been the nicest of the evening. A smart regroup from
Maggie Berleth to
Emma Burke was followed by a quick up to
Chelsea Bell for a clean zone entry. Bell made a quick pass to
Kelsey MacPherson drawing two defenders in the slot before sliding the puck to an open
Erin Flaherty for a nice deke and a 5 – 0 lead. Thayer did not go quietly as they created numerous chances on the SPS net.
Paige MacPhee earned the shutout by making over thirty saves, none better than a left pad save in the second period that prevented a sure goal. Well done, SPS for a super team effort!
The Big Red will get some well-deserved rest this weekend and return to campus on Tuesday before they host Lakes Region foe New Hampton on Wednesday and travel Marion, MA to take on the Tabor Seawolves on Friday.
Go Big Red!
