Our Program

The St. Paul's School boys cross country team competes as part of the Lakes Region league; we also race competitively in the top division within the New England Prep School Track Association (NEPSTA). We fare well against schools in the local area, as last year's first-place finish among 13 teams at the Capital Area Cross Country Championships indicates. In winning the 2024 Lakes Region Championships, we continued a long undefeated streak in that league. In the 2024 NEPSTA Division 1 championship race, the team finished fifth, racing as the smallest co-ed school competing in that top division.

The coaching staff uses a training program that has consistently produced fast runners for years. Depending on each runner's training history, a student can expect to run four to six days a week; each week typically includes one long run, one workout at faster paces and a race against another school. On long runs and workout days we typically split into three or more groups of varying speeds; each group receives an individualized plan designed to meet those runners at their current capacity. We welcome students of all running experiences (including none at all!).

Coaching

Head Coach Harrison Soebroto has been working with SPS runners since 2018, and his teams were undefeated in league competition and Lakes Region Champions from 2018 to 2024, with the exception of the non-racing 2020 season. Coach Soebroto holds Coach level 1 certifications from USTAF and US Rowing, as he is also an enthusiastic coach for the boys crew team.

Coach Soebroto majored in English and philosophy and earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia University — Columbia College in 2012. He then spent two years teaching in Brooklyn, New York, as a Teacher for America Corps member while simultaneously earning a master's degree from Fordham University's Graduate School of Education. He went on to complete a master's in human development and psychology at Harvard's Graduate School of Education while working at a tutoring non-profit in Boston. Coach Soebroto also coaches sculling at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in northern Vermont during the summer.

Facilities

The SPS cross country course is a very well-kept, wide and beautiful trail that is used for training and serves as the team's home race course. The course takes runners 3.1 miles around campus and through the surrounding woods. Practices take advantage of SPS's 2,000-acre grounds, which include 25 miles of wooded trails.

Become Big Red. The color will suit you.

Sportsmanship, respect and kindness are at the core of our coaching and playing, whether at the club, junior varsity or varsity team level. On the field, court and ice, students step into leadership roles, taking as their role models the coaches who also serve as their classroom teachers and house advisers. Our 95,000-square-foot Athletic and Fitness Center serves the entire St. Paul's community, helping all students prioritize their physical well being — no matter their athletic interests or skill level.
