Our Program

As a strong program in New England, St. Paul's School field hockey has achieved much success over the years with a team of committed college-bound athletes across many sports. The team competes against some of the top high school teams in New England and has been Lakes Region Champions four out of the last six years, including 2024. Notably, SPS has had many All-NEPSAC and All-Lakes Region players come through the program, some of whom have gone on to play college field hockey at the Division I and Division III levels for strong academic and athletic institutions including Yale, Duke, Middlebury, Tufts and Hamilton.

The team's coaches are passionate about field hockey and look forward to going to the turf field every afternoon in the fall to help their athletes achieve their goals. SPS believes in fostering a great team culture and environment that will help students grow as both athletes and people during their high school careers.

Coach Crutchfield has made an impact on countless SPS students as an inspiring and dedicated coach. She has led SPS varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams to undefeated seasons and ISL and New England Championships, and her players have received league, New England and All-American recognition under her guidance as well as in college.

Coaching

Head Coach Heather Crutchfield has spent her career at St. Paul's as an associate dean of admissions, the School's first female athletic director, and as an associate dean of students. She also was a member of the New England Preparatory Schools Athletic Council (NEPSAC) executive committee.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire, where she played both field hockey and lacrosse and was a starter for all four years in both sports. An All-American in lacrosse, Coach Crutchfield won the NCAA Division I Lacrosse National Championship in 1985 when UNH defeated Maryland in the title game. She also played in the Final Four in field hockey four times.

Sportsmanship, respect and kindness are at the core of our coaching and playing, whether at the club, junior varsity or varsity team level. On the field, court and ice, students step into leadership roles, taking as their role models the coaches who also serve as their classroom teachers and house advisers. Our 95,000-square-foot Athletic and Fitness Center serves the entire St. Paul's community, helping all students prioritize their physical well being — no matter their athletic interests or skill level.
