Our Program

The St. Paul's School Nordic team has done well in recent years, largely due to each skier contributing as a team member. We have enjoyed a wide range of talent in our program, from first-time skiers to aspiring national competitors. At SPS there is always a spot for new energy, honed experience and every athlete who strives to be their best self.

The Nordic team competes in the Lake Region Ski League, as well as within Class A of the NEPSAC. Our program skis against many of the best prep school teams in New England, often achieving impressive results. SPS boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including training areas, equipment and support staff, all designed to foster your development as an athlete. We maintain five kilometers of ski trails on the School grounds, groomed for both skate and classic. Especially motivated skiers compete in additional events such as the New England Ski Association's Eastern Cup Circuit and the New Hampshire Coaches Series races to qualify to represent team NH at the Northeastern U16 and Eastern High School championship races.

Coach Betournay has helped develop St. Paul's skiers who have moved on to ski Nordic at Dartmouth, Williams, Bowdoin, St. Lawrence and Bates.

Coaching

Head Coach Scott Betournay has been involved in the Nordic program for many years, including six years as the head coach. He is an active Nordic competitor, with podium finishes at the United States Biathlon Association National Championships both on snow and rollerski. Coach Betournay is also a L200 certified Nordic coach for US Ski and Snowboard. Joined this year by assistant coaches Cindy Muther and Eli Durmer, the coaching staff focuses on helping skiers improve their racing abilities, while also ensuring that the team continues to be a rewarding experience for all. As student-athletes, SPS skiers pride themselves on building strong bonds within the team. The whole team happily admits to becoming somewhat giddy every winter for thick blankets of snow, and hopes you might as well.

Become Big Red. The color will suit you.

Sportsmanship, respect and kindness are at the core of our coaching and playing, whether at the club, junior varsity or varsity team level. On the field, court and ice, students step into leadership roles, taking as their role models the coaches who also serve as their classroom teachers and house advisers. Our 95,000-square-foot Athletic and Fitness Center serves the entire St. Paul's community, helping all students prioritize their physical well being — no matter their athletic interests or skill level.
