St. Paul's School

Our Program

The St. Paul's School softball program is a perennial powerhouse in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC). Our program is home to talented student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the high school- and travel-softball fields. Over the last decade, athletes have gone on to or are committed to play at the collegiate level, including in the NESCAC, ECAC, NEWMAC and ACC. In addition to college-bound softball players, our program is filled out by two- and three-sport athletes who enjoy competing and having fun. We believe in fostering a great team culture and environment that will help you grow as both a student-athlete and person during your high school career.

SPS softball alumnae have gone on to play at highly competitive collegiate levels. Our training program is structured to give our players the technical and mental skillset to make an immediate impact at the next level. In recent years, our former players have attended highly selective and nationally ranked NCAA Division I and Division III programs.

Coaching

Head Coach Sarah Boylan began coaching varsity softball in the spring of 2016. Since she took over, the program has steadily grown into one of the premier softball programs in New England. As of 2025, Coach Boylan's career coaching record at SPS is 91-45. Over the past three years, the Big Red have earned an impressive 0.800 winning percentage and have advanced to the finals of the Big East Tournament twice. Players benefit from optional, year-round training sessions on campus, and each spring, the team travels to Florida to compete against schools from around the country.

Coach Boylan graduated cum laude from Middlebury College, earning a B.A. in molecular biology and biochemistry. In addition, she earned her Masters of Liberal Arts in biology from Harvard Extension School, completing her thesis at The Harvard Stem Cell Institute on the molecular signaling mechanism of TGF-b ligands. At her graduation from Harvard, Coach Boylan was awarded the Thomas Small Prize based on academic achievement and character. In addition to her work on the diamond, she teaches molecular biology and serves as the director of the School's Applied Science & Engineering Program.

Coach Boylan played four years of NEPSAC softball at Phillips Academy Andover, where she won the Wennick Award for exemplifying the spirit of Andover softball. At Middlebury College, she was a four-year starter and senior captain for the softball team, winning the NESCAC championship her sophomore year.

Facilities

The SPS varsity softball diamond is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science and is equipped with new dugouts and a dedicated batting cage. On warm spring days, our many fans enjoy cheering from the stands or from beyond the foul line as the team competes. SPS has excellent indoor facilities as well, with a full turf infield and batting cages in Matthes Cage for practice for off-season training.

Sportsmanship, respect and kindness are at the core of our coaching and playing, whether at the club, junior varsity or varsity team level. On the field, court and ice, students step into leadership roles, taking as their role models the coaches who also serve as their classroom teachers and house advisers. Our 95,000-square-foot Athletic and Fitness Center serves the entire St. Paul's community, helping all students prioritize their physical well being — no matter their athletic interests or skill level.
