Our Program

Following its inaugural 2024-25 season, St. Paul's School swimming and diving is focused on building the program, both continuing past traditions and forming new ones. We are very excited about the future direction and potential of the program.

The student-athlete model at SPS has long emphasized excellence in both academics and athletics, prioritizing character development and personal growth in addition to performance. The swimming and diving team's coaches, all of whom reside and teach at SPS, are dedicated to mentoring student-athletes to attain their personal best and find fulfillment in the pride and joy that comes from being a member of a team.

We have a robust schedule, competing in dual- or tri-meets with nine other NEPSAC schools throughout a winter season that culminates in league championships.

Coaching

Head Coach Mike Carroll has coached swimming and water polo for decades at the club and high school levels. He has coached and mentored All-Americans and future Division I swimmers and players, and enjoys most the art and science of cultivating a season in which the vitality, camaraderie and inspiration of team competition can be experienced by athletes at every level.

Coach Carroll grew up outside of Boston, swimming at the club, prep, national and college level. His fondest memories of the sport range from savoring the first popsicle he earned for racing across the pool at age 5 to swimming in open water off the coast of Hawaii.

Facilities

The SPS swimming and diving team competes at the Ma Pool at the Athletic and Fitness Center. Opened in the fall of 2004, this 60' by 75' pool features eight 25-yard lanes with starting blocks and a 1-meter diving board for practice and competition. The facility also includes an elevated observation area for families and fans.

SPS Athlete Continues to Break Records

Last fall, halfway through her third season as a member of the SPS girls varsity soccer team, Emily "Milly" Kirkman '25 decided she was ready for a new challenge and made the switch to cross country. After running in only four races, she earned Lakes Region All-Star and NEPSAC All-League Honrable Mention honors for her contributions to varsity scoring, including a top-10 finish at the Lakes Region Championship. In December, she ran a half-marathon — her first — and took first place in the female 19-and-under division. Next fall, Kirkman will matriculate to Dartmouth College as a recruited diver, a sport she took up in earnest only three and a half years ago. As SPS introduces swimming and diving as a varsity sport this winter season, Kirkman is already rewriting the record books at NEPSAC school pools across New England, starting with her debut competition at Phillips Academy Andover on Jan. 18.

Become Big Red. The color will suit you.

Sportsmanship, respect and kindness are at the core of our coaching and playing, whether at the club, junior varsity or varsity team level. On the field, court and ice, students step into leadership roles, taking as their role models the coaches who also serve as their classroom teachers and house advisers. Our 95,000-square-foot Athletic and Fitness Center serves the entire St. Paul's community, helping all students prioritize their physical well being — no matter their athletic interests or skill level.
