On Friday night, December 20th, day two of the 41st Annual Avon Old Farms School Christmas Classic, the "Big Red" faced off against the host school in the
9:00 p.m. game to determine who would play the Berkshire School "Bears" in the championship game
at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. The St. Paul's School skaters played a strong first half, although they finished the first twenty-five minutes down one to zero due to the "Winged Beavers" converting on their only three versus two line rush five minutes into the game.
In the second half, the "Big Red" started well and quickly established their gritty defensive game. Unfortunately, a St. Paul's School penalty in the neutral zone led to an Avon Old Farms School power play. The "Winged Beavers" converted on the man-advantage opportunity to take a two-goal lead and never looked back. The home team scored two more goals: one during four versus four-play and one at even strength. In the closing minutes of the game,
Mitchell Smith '27 (Thunder Bay, ON) got the Millville skaters on the board when he fired a "wicked wrister" past the Avon netminder from the slot, spoiling the shutout for the "Winged Beavers."
The "Big Red" played a lot of quality hockey today against two tough New England Prep School opponents: Tabor Academy "Seawolves" and the Avon Old Farms School "Winged Beavers." They will square off against the Loomis Chaffee "Pelicans"
at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 21st, before heading home for the holiday break.
