In the late afternoon on Saturday, January 18
th, the St. Paul's School boys' varsity hockey team traveled north on Route 89 to Meriden to take on the Kimball Union "Wildcats" for a 6:00 PM puck drop at Akerstrom Arena. The game opened similarly to their previous meeting on December 13th, when the two teams skated to a 4-4 tie. The "Big Red" and the "Wildcats" ended the first period in a 0-0 tie. During the first eighteen minutes of play, the "Wildcats" spent more time on the offensive attack than the "Big Red." However, St. Paul's skaters defended well and were opportunistic on offense.
Â
In the second period, Kimball Union scored three goals: one on a line rush and two on the power play. St. Paul's School scored their lone goal of the game on the power play when
Mitchell Smith '27 (Thunder Bay, ON) took a cross-ice pass from
Anderson Kilbourne '26 (Duxbury, MA), which originated from a shot by
Matt Vohra '25 (Valley, NS), and deposited the puck into the back of the net, making the score 3-1 after the thirty-six-minutes of play.
Â
In the third period, the "Wildcats" scored three more goals: one on the power play, one short-handed, and one off a faceoff, bringing their final tally to six goals. St. Paul's School remained opportunistic offensively but was unable to get another puck past the Kimball Union goaltender, and the final score stood at 6-1 at the end of regulation.
Blake Truchon '26 (South Burlington, VT) was the hard-luck loser in the "Big Red" net.
Â
The "Big Red" boys varsity hockey team is back in action on Wednesday, January 22
nd, at 4:00 PM in the Hockey Center on Gordon Rink against the Proctor Academy "Hornets."
