The boys varsity hockey team faced off against the Proctor Academy "Hornets" on Wednesday afternoon, January 22nd, in the Hockey Center on Gordon Rink at 4:00 PM. They skated away with a 6-1 victory over their Lakes Region hockey conference opponent. The "Big Red" victory snapped a five-game losing streak. Millville netminder
Blake Truchon ?26 (South Burlington, VT) had a great game between the pipes, stopping 31 of 32 Proctor shots on net. Truchon made several key saves at crucial moments when the game was close in the first and second periods, giving his team the room to generate offensive chances while frustrating the Proctor attack. As a result, after the first eighteen minutes of play, the score was 0-0.
Â
In the second period, the "Big Red" offense started to open up, scoring three goals in each of the remaining two periods.
Mitchell Smith ?27 (Thunder Bay, ON) was a force in St. Paul's School's offensive outburst, registering 1 goal and 4 assists. Sixth Form captain
Matt Vohra ?25 (Valley, NS) led the way in goals scored, potting two goals and one assist. Vohra scored the "Big Red's" first and third goals. His first goal was scored on a rebound shot early in the second period, and his second goal was scored 32 seconds into the third period on a long snapshot from the high ice, giving the Millville skaters a crucial 4-1 lead at the start of the last period of play.
Anderson Kilbourne ?26 (Duxbury, MA) registered three points, scoring a goal and tallying two assists. Kilbourne's shorthanded goal, the second "Big Red" goal of the game and the game-winning goal, was a back-breaking goal for Proctor. Kilbourne danced through two Proctor defensemen at their defensive blue line and then deposited a nifty backhand shot between the legs of Proctor's goalie to energize the "Big Red" bench.
Â
In the third period,
Patrick Cooley ?25 (Rutland, VT) and Fin Kilbourne ?27 (Duxbury, MA) also registered goals for the "boys of winter." Each of Cooley and Kilbourne's goals originated from a two-on-one counterattack when the "Hornets" were caught up ice, pressing to climb back into the game and find their second goal. The "Big Red" defense, comprised of
Avery Ferraris ?25 (Pawling, NY),
Quinn Brandell ?26 (Plattsburgh, NY),
Colin O'Leary ?27 (Winthrop, MA),
Chay Simons ?27 (Atlanta, GA),
Brady Hall ?26 (Newport, RI),
Elijah Nacht ?26 (Denver, CO), and Whit Fusting ?28 (Telluride, CO), was rock solid all game; whenever there was a breakdown, Truchon was ready and square to make the save.
