After two good days of practice, the Big Red Girl's Varsity Hockey team was back in action hosting the Spartans of Lawrence Academy on the Gordon Rink. Playing with speed and energy, SPS got on the board six minutes into the contest when forward
Cadence Crowley went high glove side from the top of the right circle after a pass from
Maggie Berleth.
Erin Flaherty scored five minutes later with the helper coming from
Kelsey MacPherson. The Flaherty, Bell, MacPherson line created chances all night long. Despite the territorial advantage, the Big Red knew this game was far from over.
The second period saw the Big Red continue to score goals and at the same time give up several quality chance to the Spartans. Fortunately, goaltender
Paige MacPhee was once again on her game and smothered several great back post chances. Offensively it was Flaherty again followed by a quick wrist shot through a screen by
Charlotte Cohen to make it a 4 – 0 game. Congratulations to Charlotte for her first goal of her SPS career! Macpherson netted one more before the period ended when she banged home a rebound of a Bell shot.
The third period saw the Big Red tally two more goals and at the same time limit the Spartan chances. The first goal occurred when
Madelyn Humber got in tight to the goal and deftly snapped a backhander to the roof of the net. Co-captain
Tess Mulkerron scored the final tally after which the squad defended well over the last ten minutes and helped MacPhee finish the well-earned shut out.
A total team effort for a strong win. Well done, SPS.
The squad travels to Middlesex School (Concord, MA) on Friday for a 5:15 puck drop and then has a quick turnaround as they host the Bulls of Holderness on Saturday afternoon at 3:30. A busy and fun weekend ahead. Hope you can join in on the action.
Go Big Red.
