In the 6:30 game, the Big Red took on the St. Mark's Lion. Both teams were playing with heavy legs from their morning games, and the pace was not as quick as it had earlier in the day. However, SPS knew that puck movement was going to be the key to creating opportunities. The Big Red possessed the puck well and maintained the territorial advantage for much of the first period but could not open the scoring.
The second period saw the Big Red finally get on the board. With 8:00 minutes to play, and SPS on the power play,
Madeline Allen moved the puck to
Madelyn Humber who slid the puck to
Erin Flaherty for a one-timer and a lead they would not relinquish. Two minutes later, using the Lions defenseman as a screen,
Madeline Allen would make it 2 – 0 with a powerful snapshot into the upper corner from long distance. Credit
Malin Wilde and
Madelyn Humber for sharp puck movement through the neutral zone to create the opportunity. SPS limited their defensive mistakes, but when they did occur third form goaltender
Julia Alessandro was ready to make the save. Sharp on her angles and excellent in her rebound control,
Julia Alessandro earned her second shutout of the season. And the team earned a festive holiday trip to the nearby Ben and Jerry's!
The Big Red will take on the Spartans of Lawrence Academy in the 3
rd place game of the Harrington Tournament Sunday at noon.
Go Big Red.
