SPS 2 - Hotchkiss 4
Saturday, January 10th
Schmidt Rink
Lakeville, Connecticut
The St. Paul's School varsity boys hockey team traveled down to Lakeville, Connecticut to take on a Founders League opponent, the Hotchkiss School "Bearcats," and were defeated by a score of four-to-two. The "Bearcats" scored two goals in the first eight minutes of play to take a two-to-zero lead and the "Big Red" responded in the closing minutes of the period when Max Romano '27 banged home a rebound shot for his first goal of the season. There was no scoring in the second period, although "Big Red" skaters worked tirelessly to even the game. Seven minutes into the third period, the "Big Red's" persistence paid off when Michell Smith '28 scored a power play goal. Smith made a great individual effort to dance by a "Bearcat" defender in the high ice, skated into the slot, and fired a puck by the Hotchkiss goaltender. Hotchkiss would respond by scoring a four-versus-three goal three minutes later and then an empty net goal with thirty-three seconds left in regulation.
The "Big Red" resumes Lakes Region Conference hockey play on Wednesday, January 14th when they travel north to Plymouth to take on the Holderness School "Bulls" on Fiore Rink in Alfond Arena at 3:00 pm.
