SPS 2 - Kimball Union Academy 4
Saturday, January 17th
Hockey Center / Gordon Rink
Concord, New Hampshire
The "Big Red" varsity boys hockey team hosted the Kimball Union Academy "Wildcats" in the Hockey Center on Gordon Rink and were defeated by a score of four to two. The contest was extremely tightly contested; the score after the first period of play was tied at one, and after the second period of play, it was tied at two. The "Wildcats" scored the game-winning goal with three minutes, and thirty-nine seconds left in regulation play. The "Big Red" skated furiously in the closing minutes to even the game, but they were unable to find the elusive game-tying goal.  Â
Â
St. Paul's School goal scorers were Jaden Ficek '26 and Anderson Kilbourne '26. Ficek's goal was the first goal of the game. The crafty forward redirected a Gavin Code '26 shot to the upper corner from the low slot four minutes and seventeen seconds into the start of the game. Kilbourne's goal came with a minute and forty-one seconds left to play in the second period when he made a great individual effort to fend off the Kimball Union defender on the right side of the rink and fired a shot on goal that found the upper right corner of the net to tie the game at two. The "Wildcats" scored their game-winning goal off a rebound shot that originated from their right defenseman at their offensive blue line. The visitors would follow up their go-ahead goal with an empty net goal with fifty-five seconds left to play in the game.          Â
Â
St. Paul's School, goaltender Matteo Vessella '27, was the "hard luck" loser in net, stopping thirty-three of thirty-six Kimball Union Academy shots.
The "Big Red" varsity boys hockey team will resume action Wednesday, January 21, at 4:15 pm when they travel north to take on the Proctor Academy "Hornets" in the Teddy Maloney Rink.
