The visitors got off to a very quick start hitting multiple posts and the crossbar in the first three shifts of the game. The Big Red cleaned up their decision-making and the game settled into well played up and down battle. While SPS had some grade B chances in the first period, Groton had the edge in play as the period ended 0 – 0.
SPS came out ready to go in the second, peppering the Groton net with 22 shots on goal. From the eleven-minute mark to the seven-minute mark particularly, the Big Red had numerous Grade A chances.
Cadence Crowley,
Chelsea Bell,
Kelsey MacPherson and
Maggie Berleth all had super chances and unfortunately could not break the deadlock. This period would also end scoreless.
The Big Red continued to create good chances in the third with
Maealie Glanzer and
Erin Flaherty having the two best. The Groton goaltender would stop all 49 shots she would see on the evening. Not to be outdone,
Paige MacPhee would earn a shut out of here own stopping 29 shots by the Groton side – several of which the Groton shooter thought would be in the back of the net. A five-minute overtime followed regulation. Both teams had chances to end the contest. The best chance came with 36 seconds to play when a
Maggie Berleth shot through a crowd was saved and the rebound fell to the backside where
Chelsea Bell hit it well first time and the Zebra goaltender made the save of the game to finish this one 0 – 0. Well played by both teams. The Big Red played a strong game as they came together throughout the contest.
