After two and a half weeks of a holiday break, the St. Paul's School "Big Red" boys hockey team resumed action on the road at Groton School and skated away with a six - to - two win.
In the first period of play, the "Zebras" jumped on the scoreboard first when they converted on their first power-play opportunity with a nice tick-tack-toe passing sequence that drew the attention of the "Big Red" skaters. From that point forward, the St. Paul's School boys varsity hockey team elevated its game. Sixth Form captain
Harry Dermody tied the game at one when he took an Anderson Kilbourne '26 pass and wristed it by the Groton goalie from the middle of the left offensive zone face-off circle. St. Paul's School continued to build good momentum in the first eighteen minutes of play but were unable to score that elusive go-ahead goal.
In the remaining thirty-six minutes of play, the "Big Red" scored five goals, two in the second and three in the third period.
Callum Green '27 and Anderson Kilbourne '26 potted goals in four - on - four play to give the St. Paul's School a solid three - to - one lead for most of the second period. The "Zebras" scored with three minutes left in the middle period to close the "Big Red" lead to one. Callum Green '27 made a wonderful cross-crease pass to
Ryan Vohra '27 on the back post to give the visitors a four-to-two lead. For the remaining sixteen minutes of play, the St. Paul's School skaters did an excellent job of making the "Zebras" defend and have to come two hundred feet to generate offense. In the closing minutes of play, Groton pulled their goalie to try to cut the St. Paul's School lead to one, but the "Big Red" defense and goaltender
Blake Truchon '27 stood tall, thwarting several quality Groton scoring attempts.
Mitchell Smith '26 and Fin Kilbourne '26 each scored an empty net goal with less than two minutes to play to cement the victory.
The "Big Red" will resume action on Wednesday, January 7th, when they play Brooks School at 4:00 pm in the Hockey Center.
