SPS 3 – Belmont Hill School 2
January 31, 2026
Hockey Center / Gordon Rink
Concord, New Hampshire
The St. Paul's School varsity boys "Big Red" hockey team played host to the Belmont Hill School "Sextants" in the Hockey Center on Gordon Rink and earned a well-deserved three-to-two win to close out the month of January. Belmont Hill School scored the first and only goal of the first period. In the second period, Callum Green '27 tied the game at one at the nine-minute and the twenty-five-second mark of the second period when he broke in on a partial two-versus-one and fired a shot past the Belmont Hill School goalie to the upper corner of the net from the right face-off dot. Belmont Hill School responded two minutes later with their second goal of the game to take a two-to-one lead into the locker room after thirty-six minutes of play.
In the third period of play, the "Big Red" scored a power-play goal and a short-handed goal in a span of one minute and seventeen seconds to give themselves the lead, and they played "locked-down" team defense to seal the victory. The St. Paul's School power play goal came eight minutes and twenty-two seconds into the third period when Colin O'Leary collected a puck from behind the back of the Belmont Hill net and found Sixth Form captain, Harry Dermody '26, skating to the net from the right corner of the rink. Dermody collected the puck off of his right skate, which caused the puck to bounce up in the air; Dermody, like a baseball player, then bunted the puck into the upper corner of the net. The game-winning goal was scored by Mitchell Smith '27 when he collected a Belmont Hill School turnover caused by Callum Green at the top of the right offensive zone face-off circle. Smith collected the puck and, in one motion, fired an absolute rocket underneath the right-hand side of the crossbar. For the remaining minutes of play, the "Big Red" skated and defended furiously to protect their one-goal lead and earn a great team win in front of assistant captain goalie, Blake Truchon '27, who stopped thirty-four of thirty-six Belmont Hill shots.
The "Big Red" are back in action on Wednesday, February 4th, when they travel north to take on Lakes Region opponent New Hampton School "Huskies" in the Jacobson arena at 4:00 pm.
