SPS Beats New Hampton at Home

SPS 5 – New Hampton School 2
February 6, 2026
Hockey Center / Gordon RinK
Concord, New Hampshire

The "Big Red" varsity boys hockey team hosted the New Hampton School "Huskies" on the afternoon of the long winter weekend break, and they exploded for two goals on the power-play in the third period to earn a five-to-two victory against the visiting team. In fact, the "Big Red" power-play was the difference in the contest. Four of the St. Paul's School goals came on the power play, and the fifth goal was an empty-net goal by the game's leading scorer, Mitchell Smith '27, one goal and two assists. Smith's goal came when the Huskies pulled their goaltender in the closing minutes of the game for an extra attacker. Finian Kilbourne '27 was the "Big Red's" leading goal scorer, as he potted two power-play goals, the first and fourth St. Paul's School goals of the game. Kilbourne's first goal was a deflection off a Quinn Brandell '26 point shot from the middle of the offensive blue-line. Kilbourne's second goal came when he picked a loose puck in the high slot, and he collected it in one motion and wired it to the upper corner of the New Hampton net to give the St. Paul's School skaters a four-to-two lead with nine minutes to play in the third period.

Callum Green '27 and Colin O'Leary '27 scored the "Big Red's" second and third power-play goals. Green's goal came in the second period off a Mitchell Smith pass to the weak side of the ice, and Green took advantage of an O'Leary screen to wrist the puck by the New Hampton netminder.

O'Leary's power play goal was the game-winner, and his goal came three minutes into the third period, when he took a pass from Sixth Form captain Harry Dermody that originated from Smith on the right side of the rink; O'Leary backhanded the puck to the back of the net to give the home team a three-to-two lead.

St. Paul's School assistant captain, Blake Truchon '26, was the winning goalie. Truchon stopped thirty-four of thirty-six New Hampton School shots, making several key saves at crucial moments in the game.

The "Big Red" varsity boys hockey team resumes action on Wednesday, February 11, in the Hockey Center on Gordon Rink when they play host to the Brewster Academy "Bobcats" at 5:30 pm.
