On December 21st, day three of the 41st Annual Avon Old Farms Christmas Classic, the "Big Red" faced off against the Loomis Chaffee "Pelicans" from Windsor, Connecticut, for the 7th/8th place game in the Jennings Fairchild Arena on the John T. Gardner Rink. In the early portion of the first half, the Loomis Chaffee "Pelicans" were on their toes and put the Millville skaters on their heels. The "Big Red" steadied their game and found their legs when Sixth Form forward
Michael O'Brien (Bedford, NS) wheeled out of the left corner of the offensive end, climbed the wall to the center of the offensive zone, and fired a wrist shot from fifty-five feet into the upper corner, giving the St. Paul's School skaters a one-goal lead. Loomis Chaffee tied the game several minutes later, and then
Anderson Kilbourne '26 (Duxbury, MA) scored two goals for the "Big Red" in a span of two minutes, giving the Millville skaters a three-to-one lead. Kilbourne's second goal, the third St. Paul's School goal, was an absolute missile of a snapshot from the left side of the slot to the right upper corner of the net, hitting the back bar with authority.
Â
The score remained three-to-one for the balance of the first half of play. The "Big Red," playing on extremely short rest, headed to the locker room for intermission to regroup and rejuvenate for the final twenty-five minutes of hockey for the 2024 calendar year. However, the "hockey gods" had a different plan for the St. Paul's School varsity hockey team, granting the Millville skaters five minutes of overtime play. After surrendering their two-goal lead, both teams switched ends for the long change. With a little less than three minutes to play in the five-minute overtime, the Loomis Chaffee "Pelicans" took advantage of a bouncing puck on the bad ice in the neutral zone and skated in on the St. Paul's School defense to convert on their rebound opportunity off a two-on-one break for the win.
Â
The "Big Red" heads into the holiday break with a record of three wins, five losses, and one tie in New England Prep School Ice Hockey play. The St. Paul's School boys varsity hockey team will return to actionÂ
on Saturday, January 4th at 9:00 a.m., when they play St. George's School at the Tabor Academy, Joshua Weeks New Year's Invitational on the Travis Roy Rink in Marion, Massachusetts.
