Girls Squash Finish 4th at Class A New Englands

Highest finish in over a decade

The SPS Girls Varsity Squash team concluded the regular season with an impressive 9-1 record, clinching the 4th seed in the highly competitive Class A New England Post Season Tournament. Their journey in the tournament kicked off against the formidable #5 ranked Winsor in the first round.

Just days before, on a tense Wednesday encounter, SPS narrowly edged past Winsor with a hard-fought 5-2 victory. Aware of Winsor's depth and strong coaching, SPS anticipated another intense battle. True to expectations, Winsor surged early in the match, avenging their previous loss by securing an early lead with a win at #4 on Saturday.

Undeterred, Mary Chu swiftly leveled the score to 1-1 with a commanding 3-0 win at #6. Daisy Wu, facing match point in the decisive fifth game at #7, showcased remarkable resilience to snatch a gritty 3-2 victory. Adding to the momentum, Tori Thill delivered a flawless performance with a convincing 3-0 win at #5, extending SPS's lead to 3-1.

All eyes turned to Tattie Gibbs at #3, who found herself locked in a tense 2-2 battle against a formidable opponent. Demonstrating remarkable composure and determination, Tattie clinched a gutsy 3-2 win, overcoming an adversary she had previously struggled against. This pivotal victory secured the fourth point for SPS, sealing the match in their favor.

Calla Yim continued the winning streak with a solid 3-1 victory at #1, propelling SPS into the Semi Finals and setting up a highly anticipated showdown against #1 seeded Greenwich Academy.

In the semi-finals, Greenwich Academy, the top-seeded team in the tournament and ranked as the number one team in the country, displayed their dominance with a commanding 7-0 victory over SPS. Despite a valiant effort from SPS, Greenwich's formidable lineup proved too formidable, solidifying their reputation as the premier team in the nation.

In the battle for the 3rd and 4th place playoff, St. Paul's faced off against Tabor, the #3 seed, in a rematch of their earlier season encounter where Tabor secured a narrow 4-3 victory. Tabor boasted a formidable lineup at the top of the ladder, while St. Paul's showcased their depth throughout the season.

Throughout the season, in both encounters against Tabor, St. Paul's aimed to secure just one win in the top 4 of the ladder. Despite an immense effort from the team, St. Paul's fell short of clinching that crucial fourth win, ultimately conceding the match to Tabor and settling for a 4th place finish.

Nevertheless, the 4th place finish by St. Paul's marked a significant achievement, representing their best finish in over a decade for the Big Red squad.
