Box Score In a dramatic showdown that tested the limits of both teams, the boys varsity lacrosse squad from St. Paul's School (SPS) faced off against the zebras of Groton in a game that will be remembered for its intensity and the heartbreaking finish for the Big Red. Originally slated for an earlier date, an unexpected April snowstorm necessitated a reschedule to a chilly Friday afternoon. Despite the weather setbacks, the game proceeded on the Bogle-Lechner turf at 4:00 pm under clear skies.
The match started with Groton taking the early lead by scoring the first goal. However, SPS quickly responded with Fin Kilbourne executing a flawless alley dodge to tie the game at 1-1 by the end of the first quarter. The tug-of-war continued as Groton briefly reclaimed the lead before
Quinton Delorey's double strike put SPS ahead 3-2 at halftime.
The second half saw an explosion of offense from both teams. Groton came out strong with three consecutive goals in the third quarter, but SPS's
Conley Bohan and a subsequent goal tied the game again at 5-5. Despite Groton's efforts to pull away, including a late third-quarter surge to lead 7-6, SPS remained resilient. Mike Seward's coast-to-coast effort sent the game into the final quarter with SPS trailing by a single goal.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter, with Groton extending their lead to 8-6.
Quinton Delorey, refusing to let the game slip away, scored twice to even the score at 8-8. With the clock winding down, Groton managed to edge ahead 9-8, but SPS's
Jackson Ezgar sent the game into overtime with a clutch goal with less than 20 seconds remaining.
Overtime was a tense affair, with SPS winning the opening faceoff and creating several scoring opportunities but failing to convert. Groton seized their chance, scoring the decisive goal to claim a 10-9 victory.
The Big Red, while disappointed with the outcome, displayed remarkable team spirit and resilience. They look forward to their next challenge, an away match against Holderness on Saturday, aiming to bounce back from this overtime loss.
a big shout out to the SPS grounds crew for working to get the field ready after a big snow storm earlier in the week.Â
