B6: both crews got off the line reasonably well and got into solid racing rhythm. Andover pressed out to ¾ length lead by 500m and increased this lead to 1 ½ lengths by 1000m. SPS pushed back in the third 500m, but Andover held on to win the race by about 1 length.
B5: both crews got off the line well, and both crews got into solid racing rhythm. SPS pushed out to a 1-2 seat lead by 500m, and SPS extended this lead to ½ length by the halfway point. In the second half of the course, SPS steadily built on this lead, finishing about 2 lengths ahead of Andover in a well contested race.
B4: both crews got off the line well, and both crews got into a solid racing rhythm. Andover pushed out to a 1 length lead by 500, and Andover extended this to 1 ½ lengths by the halfway point. Andover continued to build their lead over the second half of the course, finishing about 4 lengths ahead of SPS.
B3: both crews started aggressively, with Andover slowly building a ¾ length lead but 500m. Andover pushed this lead to open water in the middle 500m, but then Andover hit the buoy at the 1000m mark, disrupting their rhythm and giving SPS an opening. SPS closed the gap to ½ length, but Andover recovered their rhythm to win the race by ¾ of a length.
B2: Andover had the more aggressive start and quickly built a lead on SPS. By 500m, Andover had extended this lead to 1½ lengths. Through the middle of the course SPS worked to respond, but couldn't stop Andover's movement. Andover continued to build their margin, winning by roughly 5 lengths.
B1: after the first start was called back due to steering issues, both crews got out cleanly and aggressively, with Andover pressing out to a 1 length advantage by 500m. SPS looked to stop their movement and close the gap, with several clear efforts in the middle of the course, but Andover extended their lead to 2 lengths by 1000m, and Andover closed out the race effectively to win by 2½ lengths.
Overall: we knew that the Andover crews would present a good challenge. They came in prepared to race, and in each race, the got off the line well, challenging the corresponding SPS crews to match their speed. While each SPS crew made the effort from 250m to 750m to match the speed that Andover presented, the crews found varying levels of success. Only the 3
rd, 5
th, and 6
th eights carried the racing effectively into the 3
rd 500m, and only the 5
th eight was able to turn this competitive opportunity into a win. This gives us clear information on where we need to work this week and the task in front of us in the three weeks between now and the NEIRA Championships. There was clear effort, and clear intent, but not (yet) enough success in execution.
