SPS vs. Brunswick School
Â
                                     Â
Â
3rd Eight Comments: SPS and Brunswick both got off the line well, with Brunswick building an advantage over the 1
st 500m. At 500m, Brunswick had built their lead to one length. In the middle 500m, SPS shipped into the lead a bit, closing the gap to overlap and getting the margin down to roughly ¾ of a length. In the 3
rd 500m, both crews closed well, with SPS trying to close the gap and Brunswick trying to pull away. At the finish, Brunswick extended their lead to 1¼ lengths in a well-contested race.
Â
2nd Eight Comments: Again, both SPS and Brunswick got off the line well, with Brunswick claiming the early advantage. By 500m, Brunswick had extended their lead to one length, with SPS working to stop their movement. In the middle 500m, both crews made significant pushes, but at 1000m Brunswick held their one length lead. In the 3
rd 500m, both crews closed effectively, with SPS cutting the lead to about ¾ of a length before Brunswick responded to cross the finish nearly one length clear.
Â
1st Eight Comments: Both crews got off the line very well, with SPS claiming a three-seat advantage in the early going. At 500m, SPS held their three-seat lead, but Brunswick made an effective push in the middle 500m to reverse this margin by the 1000m mark. In the 3
rd 500m, Brunswick was the more effective crew, extending their lead to 1¼ lengths at the finish.
Â
Performance of the Day: the 2
nd eight showed excellent composure and resolve throughout their race. Despite going one length down in the 1
st 500m, SPS held to their race plan and rowed their rhythm to first freeze and then try to reverse Brunswick's advantage. While they were ultimately unsuccessful in this effort today, they showed excellent progress from their earlier races and showed the potential to continue to gain speed in May.
Â
Overall: It was a challenging day of racing in excellent conditions. The Brunswick crews showed speed down the course that the SPS crews couldn't match. Despite racing hard and competing well from behind in the 2
nd and 3
rd boat races, neither SPS crew was able to push even and challenge Brunswick in the second half of the race. In the 1
st boat race, SPS set themselves up to race effectively, but couldn't match the speed of the Brunswick push in the middle 500m. This was a strong early season race, and it highlighted both the progress the crews have made since getting on the water and the need to keep building both top-end and base speed as we move into the second half of the season.
