SPS Drops Weeks Tournament Opener to St. George’s

On January 4th, 2025, the St. Paul's School varsity hockey team started their post-holiday season with the first of three games at the Travis Roy Rink on the grounds of Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts. In the 9:00 a.m. game of the Joshua Weeks Tournament, the "Big Red" skaters took on a strong St. George's School team. Unfortunately, like last year, St. Paul's School got off to a slow start, and the "Dragons" took advantage of an offensive miscue by the "Big Red" on their second line shift in the neutral zone to score the game's first goal—forty-three seconds into the contest. The Millville skaters quickly got their blades underneath them and settled down the play between the two Episcopal boarding schools for the next fourteen minutes. Then, after a flurry of action at the fourteen-minute mark around the St. Paul's School net, a St. George's School skater picked up a puck in the left corner of the rink, made his way up to the top of the left face-off dot, and fired a shot at the net that was deflected by a teammate parked to the side of goalie Blake Truchon '26 (South Burlington, VT) for the second goal of the game, giving the "Dragons" the momentum once again. Several minutes later, assistant captain Harry Dermody '26 (Bedford, NH) took a pass from Quinn Brandell '26 (Plattsburgh, NY) off of captain Matt Vohra's '25 (Valley, NS) rush into the left side of the offensive zone and rifled a slap shot from the high slot to bring the "Big Red" to one goal away from tying the contest. Unfortunately, thirty-five seconds later, St. Paul's School surrendered their third goal of the game, violating the unofficial rule of giving up a goal immediately after a team scores. The "Big Red" did a good job with their team defense after giving up their third goal and closed the door defensively for the remaining six minutes of the first half of play.

In the second half of play, Truchon came up with several high-quality saves in the net, and the defense held their structure. There were moments in the second half where the "Big Red" defense bent, but they did not break. With five minutes remaining in the second half of play, and relying on opportunistic play, Harry Dermody '26 scored his second goal of the game when he was camped out all alone on the right side of the slot and received an Anderson Kilbourne '26 (Duxbury, MA) pass from below the goal line out of the right corner of the rink. In the last five minutes of play, the "Big Red" skated with conviction to try and find the third and tying goal of the game but came up empty-handed.

They will face off against fellow Lakes Region opponent, the Proctor Academy "Hornets," at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon to avenge a loss to the "Hornets" in early December and pull their 2025 Joshua Weeks Tournament record to one win and one loss.
