It was a crisp fall afternoon as the Big Red hosted the Bulls of Holderness. SPS had much of the possession for the first fifteen minutes and did well get in behind the Bulls defense with the likes of
Nikita Duncan,
Blake Truchon and Will Iller creating opportunities. The opportunities came off corner kicks: Seb Beech to Matt Baptiste and another to AJ Zoltowski and from through balls: Matt to Nikita with a cross to
Alexander de Burgh Codrington and
Augustus Kang to
Evers Saleeby. Solid chances, but the Big Red did not get the final clean strike they were hoping for. The half would end 0 – 0 with the hosts feeling they needed to keep pushing.
The second half showed much of the same, but credit should be given to the Bulls who worked very hard clearing balls, taking away space and pushing forward themselves. Fifteen minutes into the half, the Big Red thought they had the first goal as de Burgh Codrington found good space on the left flank, beating his opponent and was free to goal. Alex's cleanly struck ball rattled off the near post. So close. It would be Holderness who would get a chance 5 minutes later as a loose ball in the SPS box was left unchallenged and suddenly it was a 1 – 0 game, and the hosts were behind. While there was a moment of panic, SPS recovered and within 7 minutes they evened the game. A Kang free kick was flicked to the back posted and then found
Blake Truchon's head and then the foot of de Burgh Codrington. This time Alex found all net, 1 - 1! Despite their efforts, SPS could not get through the Bull defense in the final twenty minutes, and the game would end in a draw.
SPS is back on the road Saturday afternoon as they travel to Ashburnham, MA and the home of the Cushing Academy Penguins. 2:30 match - see you there.
Go Big Red!
