A relatively warm fall afternoon arrived Saturday for the perfe
ct day to be on the pit
ch one last time this season. The goal for the Big Red was to work as one to send their sixth former
class off with a positive memory of their time together. The Brewster Bob
cats had other ideas as having had a su
ccessful season thus far, they were
close to a spot in the NEPSA
C Class B tournament. As the teams got to know ea
ch other it was Brewster who look to take the early lead as a Bob
cat found himself free with a good look at goal. Sixth form keeper,
Hunter Morton, was up to the task and made an ex
cellent stop. Mu
ch of the rest of the half was played in the middle third of the field with neither team earning quality
chan
ces. With under two minutes to play in the half SPS's Alex de Burgh
Codrington showed some ni
ce footwork wide to get to the baseline and deliver a square ball a
cross the box to
Iago Arango who was one timer just missed. The half would end 0 – 0 and the Big Red knowing they had more to give.
The se
cond half was a different story as SPS
came out on the front foot, full of energy and looking to get forward. It would take just three minutes before AJ Zoltowski's long found the head of Will Iller who fli
cked the ball to the head of Heney Wilson who fli
cked the ball to the ba
ck post where Blake Tru
chon applied the final pressure, and the ball was in the ba
ck of the net! 1 – nil. The atta
ck ramped up. Wilson found Iller minutes later and Iler's shot went just over the bar. The sixth formers kept up the pressure as again Wilson to Iller for
ced a great Brewster keeper save and the rebound fell to Tru
chon who almost had his se
cond of the day. Only up by one with eighteen minutes to play, Iller another header just missed to extend the lead. A dangerous de Burgh
Codrington gave Iller a
chan
ce and
Theo Quan an appetizing rebound
chan
ce whi
ch the busy Bob
cat keeper was able to parry for a save. Matt Baptiste stru
ck a well-pla
ced free ki
ck from the top of the box to the left
corner; another save. Would the se
cond goal
come? At the other end of the field Brewster
created several
chan
ces and earned three qui
ck
corner ki
cks. With
confiden
ce and skill, keeper
Hunter Morton was very strong
colle
cting the dangerous balls. Still 1 – 0 with nine minutes to play, Seb Bee
ch served the perfe
ct
corner ki
ck to the head of Iller at the six – Will met it
cleanly, the ball was in the net and it was finally 2 – 0! With under two minutes to play,
Henry Wilson, dominant the entire se
cond half, made a skillful move in the box only to be taken down by the Bob
cat defender. Pk for the Big Red.
Theo Quan, impa
ctful as well all game long,
calmly stepped to the line, stru
ck it
clean and
celebrated his first
career goal for the Big Red. The energy on the ben
ch for Quan, and all his six form
classmates, was palpable. Well done Big Red for a
convin
cing finish.
A huge shout-out of thanks for the
commitment and perseveran
ce of this years sixth-formers; Tri-
captains Blake Tru
chon,
Henry Wilson and Pat Ri
cca, midfielders
Theo Quan and
Asun Zhu, striker Will Iler and goalkeeper
Hunter Morton. This group led by example and worked hard during ea
ch and every pra
cti
ce and game. They represented themselves, their families, the s
chool and the Big Red Boys Varsity So
ccer team well at every opportunity. We wish them well in the years and adventures ahead.
Many thanks as well to our super supportive parent group both for their deli
cious meal after the game and their generosity throughout the season.
Looking forward to
continuing to build quality young men and teammates in the years ahead.
Go Big Red!
