Varsity Field Hockey Mid-Season Check In

Through the first half of the 2025 campaign, St. Paul's Big Red Field Hockey has written a story of grit, growth, and resilience. The season opened with promise—back-to-back road victories at Austin Prep and Groton set the tone, as the team's blend of senior leadership and new energy clicked early. The midfield, anchored by steady possession and quick transitions, controlled tempo and allowed the forwards to strike efficiently.

But the next few weeks tested that rhythm. A humbling home loss to powerhouse Nobles reminded the Big Red just how fine the margin is at the NEPSAC level. They bounced back with strong road showings, including a 4-5 overtime heart breaker at New Hampton that showcased their fight even in defeat. Through it all, their road toughness became a defining trait—five of their seven wins came away from Concord, proof of a team comfortable under pressure.

Home turf, however, has been less forgiving. At Bogle Lechner Field, St. Paul's has at times struggled to find its usual flow, dropping a few games that could have swung their way with sharper finishing. Still, their 3-1 conference record reflects a program steadily maturing, one that's learning to close out tight contests and rely on collective effort rather than individual heroics.

Coach Crutchfield's group has emphasized structure—strong defensive rotations, composed outlet passes, and set-piece precision. Their penalty-corner conversions have improved, and the back line's organization has kept the Big Red competitive even against elite opposition.

As October rolls on, the story is far from finished. With crucial league match ups still ahead, St. Paul's stands at a crossroads: poised to turn early promise into a genuine playoff push. The pieces are in place—a team that knows how to travel, defends with pride, and now seeks to make home ice (or rather, home turf) its fortress. If the Big Red can harness that hunger, the second half could transform this solid start into something truly memorable—a season not just of learning, but of arrival.
