This was a tale of quarters. The first quarter the teams were tied, second quarter Deerfield dominated, the third quarter was even, fourth quarter SPS controlled.
St. Paul's came out strong starting off the scoring in the first quarter at the 11:58 mark.
Malin Wilde '29 took a quick free hit to
Liza Demain '28, who crossed the ball to
Charlotte Cohen '28 to finish, giving SPS a 1-0 lead. The play went back and forth until #9 from Deerfield dribbled into the circle unmarked and unleashed a shot on net to end the quarter tied at, 1-a-piece. The second quarter SPS played on their heels and fell short giving Deerfield momentum allowing them to score three unanswered goals. At halftime, the Pelican's regrouped, changed the line-up and came out a different team with some beautiful stick to stick passing, stepping to balls, preventing Deerfield's momentum. Two minutes into the fourth quarter SPS drew a corner, Maddie Humber '28 up to
Erin Flaherty '27, a quick drop pass to Katie Kim '29, down to Humber who knocked the ball in net bringing SPS to within 2. Finding confidence, SPS struck again as Flaherty broke down field at a sprinters pace, beating two Deerfield defenders sending a cross ball to a sprinting outreached Wilde who deflected the ball into net. This was truly an ESPN highlight goal!! It was pure effort and all out heart from both players. Now 4-3, back to the middle for the final restart. SPS broke down field into the circle nearly drawing a corner, but Deerfield blocked the pass and sent a brilliant through ball downfield beating an SPS defender who drawing a penalty stroke. Deerfield ended the game winning, 5-3.
