SPS traveled to Braintree, MA to take on Thayer Academy for a chilly and windy late afternoon game following an exciting SPS JV FH victory. With speed and power, Thayer came out strong. Play went back and forth, end to end, with quick passes, aerials, and excellent defensive stands. In the second quarter, Thayer dominated possession on their attacking right side, finally drawing a penalty stroke from a stopped ball on the goal line by the body of an SPS defender. With a beautifully placed shot in the upper left corner, the Tigers took the lead going into halftime. Right of the whistle in the 3rd quarter, SPS took the ball down field in a series of possession plays generating a scrum in front of Thayer's net.
Erin Flaherty '27 got her feet around lifting the ball over the goalie to tie the game 35 seconds into the half. The next goal came two minutes into the 4th quarter, when
Liza Demain '28 brought the ball into the attacking circle and passed flat to Flaherty who moved the goalie, passed to
Gracen Arndt '27, who redirected the ball into net, giving SPS the lead. Fired up, dominating possession, SPS was stopping balls, weaving through D, and setting up the forward line for some nice opportunities. With just under six minutes left in the game, on a Flaherty break away, SPS drew a corner. Maddie Humber '28 inserted up to Flaherty, who read the D, pulled left and sent a wrist shot towards net. From the stroke position, Demain redirected the ball to the left post where Humber was running in for a second tip, giving SPS a nice insurance goal. With 5:37 left in the game, Thayer called a time-out to regroup and, to their credit, scored 18 seconds later, pulling within one. The last few minutes proved to be the most exciting of the game as both team battled for the victory. A nod to the SPS defense of Humber, Katie Kim '29, Gabby Smith '28, Abbey Hafer '27,
Lucy Mallgrave '28 and goalie,
Julia Alessandro '29 for an incredible final defensive stand.
