GV Tennis Meets and Defeats Austin Prep

SPS headed south to play Austin Prep in Reading, Mass., on Friday, April 26, for its third match and win of the week, dropping just two lines for a 7-2 win.  

The first meeting between the Big Red and the AP Cougars fell on the eve of the Mid-spring Recess for SPS.

Liz Harder '25 at number one singles won her first set handily and was on her way to a repeat performance in the second when her opponent sustained an injury and forfeited the match to SPS, 6-1, 2-1.

Co-captain Helen Berger '24 at number two ran up against a tough opponent who handed her a 2-6, 0-6 loss. 

Poppy Duggal '25 at number three turned in a 6-3, 6-1 win and birthday girl Char Machiels '25 at number four posted a tidy 6-1, 6-1 win. 

In the number five position, co-captain Sophia Burdge '24 came out ahead for the day, 6-3, 6-0.

On line 6, Lidia Zur Muhlen '24 learned from her first set, set things straight in the second and then triumphed in a tiebreaker to make it 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, securing the overall match for SPS. 

In doubles play, Harder and Duggal at number one won 8-3 while Machiels and Zur Muhlen at number two finished at 8-5. 

Making her varsity debut, JV player Ari Kunze '27 joined Emery Gay '26 at number three for a valiant match before the duo succumbed 5-8.
