The six senior members of the girls varsity tennis team traveled to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., on Wednesday, May 14, for the rescheduled Lakes Region League tournament to compete in its four categories: Singles 1, Singles 2, Doubles 1 and Doubles 2. Every member played into the finals of their category with the Doubles 2 duo claiming their championship.
Rhys Rountree and
Logan Bensadoun, in their first LRL tournament appearance, had to wait for their Doubles 2 action to begin through a first-round bye that lasted an hour and a half. Once they hit the courts, though, there was no stopping them – they defeated a tough Proctor duo 8-5 to advance to the finals, where they played to an 8-4 victory over New Hampton for the championship.Â
In the other categories, play was immediate and nearly nonstop.Â
Liz Harder competed in the Singles 1 category and cruised through the first two rounds against New Hampton (8-2) and Holderness (8-3) before déjà vu kicked in and Brewster bested her in the finals for the second year in a row. Â
Playing Singles 2,
Poppy Duggal made her LRL tournament debut and had strong matches against Holderness (8-2) and New Hampton (8-4) before meeting her Monday-match opponent from Brewster, who'd served up a decisive victory when the two last met. Duggal took what she learned in the initial match-up to keep it even and pull ahead in the finals; she was up 7-6 and close to an upset when Brewster evened the score and ran away with the tiebreaker.Â
In Doubles 1 play, returning LRL tournament players
Amelia Guest and Char Machiels teamed up for wins over Holderness (8-3) and Brewster (8-2) before falling to Proctor, 5-8.
