The St. Paul's School Boys Junior Varsity tennis team started out their season with an impressive 7 – 2 victory over the Cardigan Mountain School Cougars. Playing inside due to inclement weather, SPS sent out their three doubles teams to start the match.
Sergio Chedraui Serrano and
Nicolas Davalos took control early and never looked back with an 8 – 0 win at first doubles. For second and third doubles, Harry Dennis and
Jaden Patel and
Ravin Chutijirawong and Matthew both fought hard in their first matches for the Big Red but lost 8 – 1 and 8 – 0. Down 2 – 1, after doubles, SPS quickly retook the lead by sweeping the first three single matches.
Christian Freed,
Alejandro Bauta, and
Luke Childs won 8 – 2 , 8 – 0, and 8 – 1 at positions 1, 2, and 3. With the Big Red only one point away from victory, our remaining three players went out for singles and continued our success.
Nathan Rosenzweig and Henry Eichelberger won 8 – 2 and 8 – 4 to secure the match. Jeb fought off multiple match points to force a final tie-break and then took control to win the final match 9 – 8 (7-3), with his teammates cheering him on. This gave the Big Red a strong start to the season with an 7 – 2 victory. After this win, the Big Red go on the road next week against Exeter and Tilton.
