On a breezy Saturday afternoon in Millville, the SPS Boys JV Tennis Team won a nail-biter against the Wildcats of Kimball Union Academy. Starting out, the Big Red sent out all six singles players and our three doubles teams. After the doubles matches, the Big Red fell into a 0 – 3 hole, as our doubles pairings of
Harry Eichelberger and
Jaden Patel (4 – 8),
Maksym Sendziuk and Vin Chutijirawong (3 – 8), and Matthew Liu and Harry Smith (5 – 8) played hard against their opponents but could not secure a victory for SPS. Momentum started to shift for the Big Red as our singles players started finishing their matches.
Henry Dennis (8 – 1), Tom Wang (8 – 0), and
Christian Freed (8 – 3) evened up the overall match score with strong performances at 2, 3, and 1 singles. Looking for two points from the final three matches, Nico Davalos (8 – 4) and
Sergio Chedraui Serrano (8 – 3) clinched the team victory at 4 and 6 singles. With the overall match decided, both teams gathered around Tony Lai's court and watched as he battled back from being down 8 – 7 to force a tiebreak and fought back again in the tiebreak from being down 6 – 1 before eventually losing to his opponent 5 – 7. This finished up an exciting weekend of SPS Tennis where they finished 2 – 0 on the weekend. Looking ahead to next week, the Big Red travel to Brewster on Wednesday before the Lakes Region JV Tennis Championship on Saturday at Cardigan.
