It was a busy 36 hours for the Girls Varsity Tennis team as it wrapped up its spring campaign: After a Friday full of classes and AP exams, the team traveled to Brewster Academy for a 5 p.m. match that went to SPS (6-3). Then, after a morning of classes on Saturday, the Big Red suited up again to host Exeter at 2:30 p.m. inside on the Stovell Tennis Courts for a rainy Seniors Day and the closest match of the season that went to Exeter, 4-5.
The Brewster Win
The Big Red's 6-3 win against its final Lakes Region League opponent marks the third year in a row that the team has gone undefeated in the league.
Missing its usual numbers one, two and four, singles players, SPS gave up the number one and two singles matches and the top doubles match but handled everything else that came its way.
Captain
Sophia Burdge '24 at number three singles and
Lidia Zur Muhlen '24 at number five let go of just one game each in their two sets, finishing 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
Skylar Christoffersen '24 at number four had an even-keeled 6-2, 6-2 win.
Logan Bensadoun '25 at number six rolled through her match to 6-3, 6-1.
Burdge and Guest, the Lakes Region League #1 Doubles Champions for two years in a row, showed why with an 8-1 win.
On line three, Tattie Gibbs '24 and
Rhys Rountree '25 teamed up for an 8-6 victory.
The Final Match vs. Exeter
The three-hour match against the GVB Exeter team inside on three courts was a nailbiter and came down to doubles after the teams split the six singles matches.
Liz Harder '25 at number one went 8-4;
Poppy Duggal '25 at number two finished fast with an 8-2 win; and
Skylar Christoffersen '24 at number four finished 8-3.
At number three, Captain
Sophia Burdge '24 fought through to a tiebreaker that went to Exeter;
Amelia Guest '25 at number five fell 2-8 and
Lidia Zur Muhlen at number six hung on but saw it slip away, 6-8.
In doubles, Harder and Duggal in the top spot put on a show that landed at 8-3.
On line two, Burdge and Christoffersen were playing well but when the door opened, Exeter charged through to catch up and overtake them, winning the match in a tiebreaker that stretched to 7-9.
With the match on the line, all eyes turned to the number three doubles contest, but it was déjà vu as the lead Zur Muhlen and Tattie Gibbs '24 built up eroded and Exeter pulled away to an 8-6 win.
