For the first time, the St. Paul's boys' varsity soccer had the opportunity to play against the Berkshire Bears. Often one of the top programs in New England, Berkshire this season has another fine squad. The Bears took control of the game from the beginning and immediately put pressure on the Big Red back line. Three minutes into the game the Bears took the lead on a well struck penalty kick. The hosts continued to put dangerous balls in the box keeping the Big Red defense on their heels. Corner clearances proved to be particularly problematic as Berkshire packed the six-yard box and scored a pair of goals top go up 3 – 0 by halftime. The Big Red worked to build their passes but were not able to generate quality chances.
Despite the score line all the Pelicans found ways to contribute to the team effort. The second half saw St. Paul's keep their defensive shape better and prevent Berkshire from getting many chances on frame. By playing quality opponents the Big Red will grow as a team. Another growth opportunity presents itself Wednesday as the Big Red hosts Worcester Academy on Hunt Field
