The Big Red made the trek south to St. Sebastian's School on a Monday afternoon. It was a slow start for the visitors as the host Arrows opened the scoring ten minutes into the game with several SPS miscues in the back ending up with a rebound goal. Unable to consistently connect passes the Big Red gave the hardworking Arrows too many opportunities with the ball and thirty minutes in they had a two goal lead. This is how the first half would end.
The squad knew they had to step it up in the second half and they also knew they could bring a faster and more competitive level of play to the pitch. They did just that and their confidence grew. With twenty minutes left to play, Will Iller '27 pushed hard into the box and was fouled by the St. Seb's defender. Pat Cooley '25, for the second game in a row, deftly slotted the pk home. The goal lifted the energy of the Big Red to an even higher level. Defenders
Gavin Nestler '25,
Blake Truchon '26 and Pat Ricca '26 gave no quarter on the flanks and with the help of
Asun Zhu '26 and
Peter Magyar '28 and Cooley in the midfield the SPS side begin to win more balls in the middle third of the field. With sixteen minutes to play a
Carter Corbett '25 throw-in was craftily flicked to the back post by Hank Haynes '28 where a side volley from Cooley rang off the post. The Arrows had a few chances of their own but the Big Red defense and goalkeeper
Hunter Morton '26 shut that door. SPS could not find the back of the net again as time ran out. A strong second half effort has the team looking forward to getting back on the pitch in two days time.
The Big Red opens league play this coming Wednesday as they host the Wildcats from KUA on Hunt field. Bring the energy and come cheer on the boys.
Go Big Red!
