The phrase barn burner was invented to describe games like this one! The girls JV hockey squad pulled off an incredible overtime win against Dexter Southfield to remain undefeated on the season and improve to a record of 8-0 at the midway point of the season. The squad travelled to Brookline, Massachusetts on a late January Wednesday afternoon to take on a physical and talented Dexter Varsity B team. Dexter jumped out to an early lead after a scrum in front of the net resulted in a score for the home team. St. Paul's responded quickly by picking up their pace and effort as
Chandler Curtis knocked home a rebound to tie the game at 1-1. With momentum building, the Pelicans kept the heat on as
Marina Kane added a second goal 30 seconds later to take the lead 2-1. Good decision making and hard work by the likes of Claire Lee, Alison Min,
Charlotte Ward,
Saylor Pachios and
Lily Chibnik, kept up the pressure.
Parker Neilson held down the fort once again in the Big Red net. However, Dexter would not go quietly and despite some end-to-end action, Dexter scored the next two goals and had a 3-2 lead in the third and final frame. The girls showed great grit and perseverance as they continued to work hard both offensively and defensively throughout the third period. With just over five minutes to go in the game,
Chandler Curtis tipped in an Ali Cabot slapshot from the point to tie the game up 3-3. A Dexter penalty in the final minute of the game gave way to some exciting chances for the Big Red on the power play, but St. Paul's was unable to score again in regulation time and the game headed to a three-on-three overtime period. Dexter committed another penalty in the opening minute of overtime and the extra man advantage allowed St. Paul's to collapse on the net and hammer home the game winning shot less than two minutes into overtime. Credit for the final game winner goes to
Chandler Curtis,
Emerson Bentley and
Meg Bohan who were all in front of the net to seal the victory. The club is excited for the well-deserved long winter weekend break and looks ahead to a tough game against New Hampton at home on Wednesday when they return. Go Big Red!
