The SPS girls JV hockey team played an upbeat and fast paced game against the other "Big Red" of Exeter and came away with their 14
th win of the season. The girls had the morning off from classes on a surprise holiday, so they were well rested as they travelled to take on Exeter at their home rink on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The girls played with a sense of urgency and wasted no time in getting to work.
Emerson Bentley set the tone by scoring on her first shift in the first minute of the game to give the Pelicans a 1 – 0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Gracen Arndt would add a second goal, a great rebound finish off a
Chandler Curtis shot, less than a minute later and the girls were off and running. Gracen would add another on her next shift out and the girls were quickly ahead 3-0. Exeter battled throughout the game and scored their only goal later in the first on a breakaway and tight shot to the near side post that beat
Parker Neilson. That would be the only goal Parker would allow as she was steadfast and strong the entire game.
Chandler Curtis would add another goal from a
Marina Kane pass to make it 4-1 going into the first break. In the second period,
Meg Bohan scrambled and scrummed to get the puck in front and score to make it 5-1. A few minutes later, Callie Fortin would send a blast from the point that was beautifully tipped by
Chandler Curtis to extend the lead to 6-1. Late in the second, Ali Cabot would grab the puck in our own zone and skate through 5 Exeter players to score our 7
th and final goal of the game. The Pelicans would not score in the final frame, but the hustle and drive was there for forwards Saylor Pacheos,
Scarlet Tien,
Hana Jang, Claire Lee, Ellie Evans, Alison Min and Allegra Caracappa who all took their lumps and kept grinding after the puck. Defensively, the team was solid with great effort and contributions from
Thayer Demers,
Lily Chibnik, Kay Sumilas and
Louisa Gosk who were rock solid defending our end of the ice. The team looks ahead to two more home games next week to wrap up the season, Proctor on Wednesday, and Lawrence Academy Friday.
