The varsity girls headed south to Northfield Mount Hermon on Wednesday, April 9, to compete on six outdoor courts. It all came down to simultaneous wins at the end to clinch the win for Big Red, 5-4.
Starting with doubles play, Sixth Form co-captains
Liz Harder and
Poppy Duggal went 8-2 in the top spot. Their formmates Char Machiels and
Amelia Guest at #2 fell 4-8 to a duo led by NMH's #1 singles player, and in the #3 spot,
Logan Bensadoun '25 and Emery Gay '26 posted a 2-8 loss.
Competing in an exhibition match,
Rhys Rountree '25 and
Lily Chibnik '28 teamed up for a 4-8 outing.
In singles play, Duggal at #2 and Machiels at #3 both finished 2-6, 2-6.
Guest at #4 cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win in front of an enthusiastic home audience and
Clara Tcherepnin '26 at #6 kept her cool to power through to a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Harder at #1 had a rematch against her 2024 opponent, who took the win last time around. Harder fought to take the first set in a tiebreaker but lost the second 2-6 to set up a 10-point match tiebreaker.
Meanwhile, Gay at #5 had recovered not only from her doubles loss but also a 2-6 loss in her first singles set to roar back with a 6-3 win in the second set to keep the day's hopes alive for SPS with a match tiebreaker. When her opponent mistakenly thought she'd won at 7-5, the duo left the court and it looked as if NMH had won the day.
After clarifying the situation — that Gay had indeed won the second set and it was a match tiebreak, not a set tiebreak — the two returned to the court to finish it out. Within seconds of each other, both Harder and Gay won their match tiebreaks 10-8 to change SPS's fortunes with a 5-4 win.
