Boys Varsity Soccer tie it late against Groton

The SPS boys' varsity soccer team is ready to begin their 2025 campaign.  This year's club will be led by 6^thform tri-captains winger Henry Wilson and backs Blake Truchon and Pat Ricca and will be counting on the high work rate of returners Hunter Morton, Asun Zhu, Will Iller and Theo Quan.  Other returnees, fifth formers Leo Colinet, AJ Zoltowski and Evers Saleeby and fourth formers Nolan Chen, Colin Smith, Hank Hayne, Noah Levy, Alexander de Burgh Codrington will add their experience to the club.  Nine newcomers look to make their mark as they begin their SPS careers; fifth formers Iago Arango and Seb Beech, fourth formers Ben Clary and Nikita Duncan and third formers Matthew Jean Baptiste, Bright Tweneboah, Augustus Kang, Jai Perry-Pereira and Enzo Cisneros.  The squad is excited by what lays ahead knowing it will take hard work, discipline and togetherness to reach their goals for success.

On Saturday, after a quick run up, the Big Red opened the season against the Zebras of Groton.  As the contest began, both sides were challenged to keep the ball consistently as play was mostly in the middle third of the park.  SPS had a quality chance mid-way through the half when Blake Truchon '26 made a smart overlapping run after a nice combination between Alexander de Burgh Codrington '28 and Bright Tweneboah '29.  Blake's near post shot was well saved by the Groton keeper.  Fifteen minutes later it would be Will Iller '26 with a header that just missed off of a serve from Seb Beech '27.  With six minutes to play in the half Groton opened the scoring as they found space in the box and took advantage.  The hosts lead would not last long as just four minutes later Nikita Duncan '28 played a through ball to co- captain Henry Wilson '26 who found enough space to slot a clean ball just inside the far post, 1–1!

The second half would begin with strong pressure by the Zebra's. They kept the ball and found ways through the SPS defense.  Thankfully, Big Red keeper Leo Colinet '27 was up to the task making several quality stops in the early going.  Groton was eventually able to regain the lead when they found space behind the defense for a breakaway that was deftly finished. As the half progressed the Big Red became more composed and began to possess the ball better.  Will Iller had several good chances, yet the equalizer remained elusive.  In the final four minutes of the match SPS played with more urgency and focused on getting more balls in the box.  They believed their chance would come.  With seemingly little time left, AJ Zoltowski '27 served a long free kick perfectly into the box, pressure on the keeper created a rebound which was handled by a Groton defender – penalty kick!  Iler stepped to box and confidently struck the ball into the back of the net.  The final whistle blew after the strike – 2 – 2 the result - exhalation for the visitors. Many lessons learned as SPS BVS begins their journey together.  The goal of getting better as a team every day begins.
