SPS Golf Wins First Match in Program History

St. Paul's Golf secures historic first victory against Kimball Union Academy

On a beautiful spring afternoon in Concord, the SPS Big Red Golfers returned from Mid-Spring Break refreshed and ready to lead a second half charge in their season. After some competitive matches before the break, the Big Red Golfers arrived at the Concord Country Club to face Lakes Region foe Kimball Union Academy in an integral Conference tilt. What followed was a dominant display of golf from our SPS golfers as they secured a 7.5 – 1.5 victory and the first ever golf team win in the history of St. Paul's School Athletics.

In the first wave of matches, #1 Patrick Cooley and #2 William Birks battled hard against their opponents from KUA. Patrick shot a 42 to win his match on the ninth hole 2 up, and William shot a 43 but lost has match on the ninth hole 1 down, as his par putt on the ninth green just missed the cup. As a team, they tied their opponents in Best Ball, and so the first round of matches finished with a score of 1.5 – 1.5. The second round was a dominant performance by the next two SPS golfers, as they swept the three matches to secure a critical three points. #3 Ryan Vohra had the low score of the day, shooting a 3 over 37 to win his match 5&3. #4 Henry Gu shot a 43 on the way to a 3&2 victory over his opponent. The combination of Ryan and Henry also proved too strong for their opponents in the Best Ball format, as they won 4&3. In the final pairing of the day, needing just a half point to win the match overall, the last SPS golfers won all three points. #5 William Carroll shot a 43 to beat his opponent 2&1and #6 Avery Ferraris sot a 42 to win his match 3&1. This combination was also too strong for their opponents as they won their Best Ball match 4&2 to secure the final point for SPS.

After this strong showing, the Big Red Golfers finished the match 7.5 – 1.5, sweeping the final six matches of the competition. With a first victory on Wednesday, the Big Red now look to carry this momentum in a busy week of Lakes Region Competition. On Thursday, the Big Red will send their JV roster to play against the JV team of KUA at Newport Golf Club in Newport NH. The varsity squad will have two days of practice before another critical Lakes Region Match against the Holderness School on Saturday at the Beaver Meadow Golf Club.
