SPS loses Close Match to Exeter

In the second match of the day on Wednesday, SPS played a six-person matchplay event against Exeter. In this match, the SPS golfers played well, battling back from early deficits to even the matches towards the final holes, but ultimately fell short by a score of 2 – 4. In the first pairing, #1 Paul Sauter got off to a strong start and maintained that consistency throughout the round, winning his match 2&1. His partner, #2 Luke Sughrue competed well, but was unable to match his opponent and lost his match 5&4. In the second pairing, #3 Paige MacPhee went the distance with her opponent, trading points early in the match before losing on the final hole 2 down. Her partner, #4 Gabby Smith rallied from an early deficit to tie her match but ended up losing 2&1. After the first two rounds, Exeter was up 3-1 and SPS needed a comeback. The final pairing of #5 Lukas Rondiak and #6 Charlotte Cohen both led and trailed their opponents throughout their rounds, ending each match tied and securing a half point. While SPS lost the overall match 2 – 4, their players demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the match and should be proud of their efforts. The Big Red will now enjoy their mid-spring recess before returning to Millville and to the practice facility next week to prepare for the second half of the season.
