After a brief delay due to heavy rain, the SPS Big Red Golfers faced the Big Blue from Andover at the Concord Country Club. The Big Red had strong performances up and down the ladder, with golfers having season best scores at our home course. After 8 tightly contested matches and 2 exhibitions, St. Paul's fell to Andover by an overall score of 6 – 2.
In the first round of matches, #1
Patrick Cooley and #2
William Birks had a near-perfect start for the Big Red, earning 1.5 out of 2 possible points against their opponents in Blue. Patrick played steady all round, shooting the low round of the day with a 2-over 36, and winning his match 1up on the 9
th green. His partner William also had a strong outing, shooting a 38 and winning the ninth hole with a par to halve his match and earn an additional half point. The next pairing of #3
Ryan Vohra and #4 Henry Gu played well, shooting a 38 and 40 respectively. Both matches came into the ninth hole down by 1, but their opponents did not let up and Ryan and Henry lost 1down after nine, making the score 1.5 – 2.5 after four matches. The third pairing was just as competitive as the second. #5
Matt Vohra shot a 38 and saved bogey after an errant tee shot on the ninth to halve his match. #6
William Carroll shot a 38 as well and was down by 1 going into the ninth, but his opponent was able to hold him off on the ninth and he lost the match 1down, making the score 2 – 4 after 6 matches. The final two matches of #7
Avery Ferraris and #8 Sammy Pargiolas would close out the overall team match. Avery shot a 41 and came into the ninth hole 1 down but could win the final hole and ended up 1down. Sammy also played well on his way to shooting a 40 but faced a strong opponent from Andover and lost 4&2. Numbers 9 and 10
Nolan Chen and Gabby Smith gained additional matchplay experience by playing 2 exhibition matches against the Big Blue and were able to go back and forth with their opponents before ultimately losing their matches.
Overall, the Big Red played very well against their opponents on Wednesday. With 4 matches going the way of Andover by just a single point, the scoreline of 2 – 6 does not give justice to how close SPS came to claiming victory. The Big Red now look ahead to a busy week of golf as they face Governors and Brooks on Saturday at Governors and a big slate of Lakes Region Competitions the following week.
